Tribute & Message From The Family

McManus Jr. Gerald J. (Jerry) 69 of Dennisville passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Jerry was born in Philadelphia and attended Holy Innocents Parish School and the Mercy Tech School on Broad Street. Most of Jerry's working career was centered around various religious, educational and hospitality institutions in the tri state area. His talented hands left their imprint on personal and commercial restoration projects in Maryland, Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Many of his family members, friends and neighbors also reaped the benefit of his special talents in old home renovation and restoration. In addition to working for many years as Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds at Lower Cape May Regional High School and in the Cape May Hospitality industry, Jerry volunteered his talents and his time with many local non-profits: Dennisville Historic Home Owners Association, Cape May County Master Gardeners, Autumn Lake Healthcare at Ocean View, the Arc of Cape May County and the Cape May County Zoo among many others. Jerry served chicken at the Cape May County 4H fair for many years and was instrumental in the opening of the Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May. Jerry is predeceased by his parents Gerald, Sr. and Jean. He is survived by his partner of 40 years, Jack Connolly, brother Gene (Denise, Christopher and Brian), sisters Marianne Kochersperger (John and Emma), Theresa Margiotta (Chuck, Abby and Ryan, Chip, Amy and Carmella), Diane Molloy (Richard, Maggie, Gene and Shaun), a large loving family-in-law and many wonderful friends. Condolence & Memory Journal

Dear Jerry, how we loved the blessing of YOU in our family. Your absence now can not be measured in words. We gave thanks for you at Mass in Our Lady of the Angels Church. We helped (down to the youngest grandson) to bring you to the peaceful place of your rest. Then, fittingly, we celebrated you again on St. Patrick's Day. As someone reminded us, "in the lilt of Irish laughter, you can hear the angels sing". Please keep smiling on Jack and all of us. All's well.

Your loving Connolly Family

I remember meeting Jerry at the Virginia Hotel, but insisting that I had met him before. It took a while before we realized that I remembered him from his work at my high school. In the midst of crazy workdays, Jerry was almost always calm, ready to laugh and put you at ease. Jack, I am so sorry for your loss, and you and your family will be in my prayers.

Jerry was one of the first people I met at Congress Hall in Cape May, 1984. He was kind, patient, honest, and generous of spirit. He had a Santa Claus-like twinkle in his eyes and he had a heart-warming laugh which I can hear right now. Jack, I am so sorry for your loss. Thanks to you and Jerry for teaching me what a loving relationship is and for the raucous and fun Christmas Parade nights at your home in Dennisville.

His quiet yet so valuable presence will surely be missed. His way of being is something to aspire to as he was always so easy and pleasant during every exchange. He was a dear friend to The Arc through his support of our events or helping us tend to the plants and landscaping and I will miss his gentle sweet smile while doing so. My heart goes out to Jack and his family and friends who will cherish his presence in their memory forever.
