Navy Emblem

AMSES, ROBERT J., of Avalon, NJ, left on January 6, 2017 in his 92nd year to join his beloved Thelma to bask together in the glow of God's eternal love. Born in Bayonne, NJ to the late Joseph and Mary Yurko Amses, he bought the house in Avalon in 1970 and moved there permanently in 1976 after moving from Syosset, NY and Denville, NJ. Bob was an active member of St. Brendan the Navigator Parish Maris Stella Church. He was a Eucharistic Minister, a CCD and Summer Bible School Teacher, lector, cantor, choir member and member of the Knights of Columbus.

Bob served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from Pace University, St. Lawrence University, and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He worked in finance for the State of New Jersey and for aerospace companies Reaction Motors Thiokol Division in Denville and PRD Electronics in Syosset.

Bob was a member of the Seven Mile Island Chorus, the American Legion, the Middle Township Seniors Club, and past president of the National Society of Accountants Morris County chapter. He volunteered at Cape Regional Medical Center and was active with many local civic issues. He enjoyed sailing, singing, playing guitar, traveling, writing poetry, drawing, water and oil painting, and gardening. Bob was known for his impromptu poetry to entertain those around him. He had a thirst for knowledge. He was an avid reader, especially Sherlock Holmes novels and archeology. He liked watching great Western movies and coaching youth baseball and basketball. He coached the St. Mary's women's basketball team. He remained physically active in his later years by rollerblading and running.

A loving and devoted father, Bob got his greatest enjoyment from the time spent with his family. He is survived by his children, Diane Amses, Susan Wilson (the late Joseph), Robert Amses (Harriet), and Kathleen Amses; his five grandchildren, Joshua, Alissa, Adam, Kevin, and Shelby; his six great grandchildren, Izzy, Lily, Sam, Leo, Oden, and Milo; his brother, Richard Amses (Phyliss); his sister, Joan Townsend (the late Donald); his numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma on October 17, 1991.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, Maris Stella Church, 50th Street and Dune Drive, Avalon, where the Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment with military honors will be in the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Cape May Court House. We would like to thank everyone at Cape Regional Medical Center for their time, talent, and heart given to our father. Donations may be made in Bob's memory through In Memory Of for the benefit of Cape Regional Medical Center at or In Memory Of, P.O. Box 5472, Charlottesville, VA 22905.
