Maher, William J., 99, on March 30, 2015 of Cape May Court House, NJ Beloved husband of Jane (nee Smollock) for 70 years. Devoted father and survived by sons William, Jr., spouse Carola and granddaughter Carolina, Edward and Richard, spouse Laurie. He is survived by many nephews and nieces, extended family and friends. Predeceased by parents Francis and Mary, 3 brothers, sister, brother-in-law and sister-in-law.
Graduate of St. John the Baptist High School, Philadelphia in 1934 where he played football, basketball and baseball. Graduate of Penn State Univ. in 1942 and member of Delta Phi Fraternity. Also, while at Penn State, graduated from R.O.T.C. training programs and commissioned 2nd Lt. and entered the U.S. Army. Veteran of WWII and member of the Scabbard and Blade, Retired Officers Association, and American Legion.
In 1964, founded and was president of the Cape May County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. The Izaak Walton League was one of the leading organizations in the campaign to preserve and protect the wetlands of Cape May County and coastal New Jersey. He was also involved in the passage of the N.J. Wetlands Act. He served as chairman of the Avalon Planning Board from 1968 to 1978 during a critical period in Avalon's development. In the early 1960's served as member and chairman of the Cape May County Water Policy Advisory Committee. Was appointed by the Mayor of Avalon to serve on the Cape May County Economic Development Committee. Also, at various times served as vice-president, president and director of the Avalon Chamber of Commerce.
Worked for 35 years in the property, casualty and marine insurance business. Retired as vice-president of Cape Corporation, division of Cape Island Marina.
Hobbies include golf and member of the Avalon Golf Club. Made a hole-in-one on number 17. Shot a score of 82 when 81 years old. Was and amateur radio operator and member of the Cape May County Amateur Radio Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and the shooting sports and was a former member of the Bay Shore Sportsman's Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Isaak Walton League of America.
Visitation will be Monday, April 6, 2015 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Ave., Cape May Court House, NJ 08210. Service will be April 7, 2015 at 11 a.m. at West Laurel Hill Cemetery Chapel, 215 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
